Gulf Week 2023
Every 2 years, the Gulf week brings together many boats for an unmissable event in southern Brittany. The Gulf of Morbihan is in the spotlight for everyone's pleasure for a week.
Well known to locals and summer visitors, the event brings together many sailors and spectators in a friendly atmosphere. Indeed, for a week, the time of a fest-noz or a parade, enthusiasts and amateurs gather together for the great festival of the gulf.
The Gulf of Morbihan will therefore be celebrating from Monday May 15 to Sunday May 21, 2023.
Monday, May 15: Opening Parade
First, a nautical parade opens Gulf Week on Monday.
The start is given between the lighthouse of Port-Navalo and Locmariaquer.
Tuesday May 16: ""Ile d'Arz Day""
Then, the crews of dozens of boats dock on the Île d'Arz and meet up with visitors for a friendly and appreciated meeting, usually on Tuesdays.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: Flotilla sailing
In the various ports of call of the flotillas, evenings are organized with entertainment, concerts, fireworks...
Saturday May 20: Grand Parade
Finally, we attend the ""great nautical spectacle"" of the event! The parade then brings together all the flotillas and all the tall ships for a majestic navigation from the exit of the Gulf – between Locmariaquer and Port Navalo – to its heart.
The organizers structure the parade by organizing groups. Two spectacular sailboats frame each group: the first leads the way and the second closes the way.
An impressive, photogenic and unmissable event!

Breton costumes
If the high Bigoudène headdress has established itself in national iconography as the key element of the traditional Breton costume, it is actually composed of a multitude of elements which differ according to the department and the village of origin. the one who wears it.
The idea of a traditional costume only emerged at the beginning of the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution made textiles less expensive and allowed it to circulate more easily. From then on, each peasant had his festive dress. Responding to an important logic of belonging, the latter is a real object of pride and representation that we wear on special occasions such as weddings, parties or markets.
In the costume everything is symbol, we can read there the social category and the city of origin of the one who wears it. For men, the width of the velvet and the length of the stripes are meaningful, while for women, it is the fineness of the fabrics and the patterns of the lace that are important.
Each territory tries to distinguish itself from its neighbor by a particular set of embroideries and colors. If we wear a headdress in all territories, it always has a particular shape and name.

Do you know the culinary specialties in Brittany?
Oh, Brittany! Its beaches, its Celtic landscapes... and its culinary specialties! Throughout the world, the taste qualities of Breton cuisine are no longer to be proven: its cider and its famous buckwheat pancakes are renowned and appreciated.
But do you know the other Breton specialties well?
But do you know the other Breton specialties well?
- Kouign-Amann: Created from bread dough covered in butter and sugar, then folded over and shaped with tiles, it is renowned for its taste and consistency.
- Crepe :You have the choice with sweet wheat, salty buckwheat or buckwheat. It is traditionally cooked on a billig: This large cast iron plate. The pancake should always be thin and slightly crispy, with the ingredients of your choice.
- Far Breton: Far Breton is a dessert similar to a clafoutis. Made with wheat, wheat and oatmeal, the recipe has evolved and we can therefore find prunes or even raisins.
- Salted butter caramel: Salted butter caramel is eaten in the form of candies of course, but we also use it in cream, spread or coulis in many recipes.
- Plougastel strawberries: Plougastel strawberries are the pride of the town! They stand out for being the first strawberries to be harvested in the year.
- Breton cider: Brittany has a sympathetic rivalry with its Norman neighbour. If the debate on the legitimacy of Mont-Saint-Michel remains the main subject, the two regions also clash over cider. Cider is an alcohol harvested through the fermentation of apples.
- Andouille de Guémené: Andouille de Guémené is a specialty of Breton gastronomy, more particularly of the commune of Guémené-sur-Scorff.It is a charcuterie made from pork stew.
- Chouchen: Chouchen is considered an amber wine that pairs well with melon. However, it is also possible to enjoy it in winter. Indeed, some people drink it like mulled wine.
- Breton cake: Breton cake is a recipe from Lorient made with butter, sugar, flour and eggs, whose texture and shape are reminiscent of Breton pucks. On the top it is customary to draw braces.
- Kig-ha-Farz: Kig-ha-Farz means "meat and far" in Breton.and is a Breton specialty from the Léon region. It is mainly composed of buckwheat flour, wheat, beef, bacon, carrots, white cabbage, leeks and finally turnips.

Why is butter salted in Brittany?
It is quite simply because of the gabelle (tax on salt). 💰 In fact, in the Middle Ages, the Duchy of Brittany was virtually independent from the Kingdom of France. 👑
Our region, rich in salt marshes 🧂 is notably exempt from the salt tax, the famous salt tax!
This is why, in Brittany, we put it everywhere. In addition, we know that salt is an excellent preservative, essential at a time when we did not have cold rooms. 🥶
Do you know the height of this story? The Breton owner of Villas de Locmiquel by birth does not like butter. 😂

Gulf week
An international maritime event, a cultural and popular festival in the magical setting of the ""Little Sea"" ( Mor Bihan in Breton ).
It is in the Gulf of Morbihan that more than a thousand traditional and classic boats meet, sailing every day. They vary their stopovers between ports and anchorages. These are the peculiarities of this "small sea" (its islands and islets, the narrow gully that separates it and protects it from the high seas, tidal reversals, choppy waves, currents and counter-currents) which determine and pace the entire nautical program of the event.
You will find exhibitions and events under marquees and in the air. To delight your taste buds, you will have the opportunity to taste oysters, grilled fish and other local products. Music, which was an integral part of Breton culture, will make you vibrate during concerts (fanfares, jazz, Celtic music, choirs, sea songs…). The youngest will be able to enjoy several play areas dedicated to children. To end with shows and nightly entertainment combining popular balls, festou-noz and fireworks.
This great free show will take place from May 10 to 16, 2021.
An appointment not to be missed ! 😃
